Richard Crawford

International Scotch Whisky Connoisseur

Truly dedicated to his cause, Richard Crawford harbors an unparalleled devotion and fondness for Scotch whisky. Born and raised in Paisley, Scotland, Crawford moved to the United States in 1991 with a scholarship from the University of Alabama Huntsville. After college, he was very active with many of the Scotch whisky societies often as a guest speaker. He was appointed The Glenlivet Ambassador to the United States in 2005.

Crawford's love for the "water of life" was inspired by both his father and uncle, who have been in the Scotch Whisky Industry for more than 25 years. He completed a Master's Class at The Glenlivet Distillery in the spring of 2005 to further his knowledge on his favorite subject, and has been traveling across the globe since, commanding the floor as a Scotch expert at countless events and shows. In 2009, Crawford was a judge at the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards, where visitors from around the world selected The Glenlivet Nàdurra as the best 13 to 20-year-old single malt whisky.

Crawford has also appeared on many T.V. and radio Shows including The Hannity Show on Fox News Network and CW11 New York, BBC America, Bloomberg, The Street.com, as well as many magazines and trade publications including GQ, Esquire and Whisky Life Magazine. On November 2nd 2009 Crawford was awarded "The Certificate for Outstanding Contribution" by the James Beard Foundation. Ricky has hosted tasting events at the British Embassy in D.C. for the Scottish 1st Minister and the British Ambassador. On June 4th 2010 Crawford met with H.R.H. The Prince of Wales at the grand opening of the new Still House at The Glenlivet Distillery.

A natural when working the crowds, the affable Crawford feels honored that he is able to educate the greater public on the history and romance of Scotch Whisky – and enhance their drinking experience to some degree. "A lot of people are pleasantly surprised when I show them that water can make all the difference," he says. "A little bit goes a long way – it can enhance so much in the way of the whisky's nose and flavor profile." In the end, he says, "It's wonderful to talk about my heritage, and to feel proud of where I'm from."

Crawford's favorite drink is The Glenlivet 18-Year-Old, taken with a splash of water to open up the wealth of flavors lingering just beneath the surface.
